What skills will the workforce need?
Transportation workers will increasingly need information technology
related skills.
In transportation - particularly in freight transportation - productivity from 1991 to 2000
rose 53 percent for rail, and 23 percent for trucking. The basic factors that affect
labor productivity are increased per-worker use of equipment such as information technology and improvements
in the organization of the logistics and other related processes, including the
information technology used in production and management of the infrastructure itself.
Improvements like these can continue to increase in California if intelligent transportation systems are installed.
It will take a trained workforce with a higher degree of digital literacy to do so and to maintain it.
